The Auto-Deletion options can be used to filter unwated e-mail based on either the Sender or the Subject, or parts of them. |

Tips on the Sender |
E-mail addresses are made up of two parts, the name (before the @ symbol) and the host (from the @ symbol onwards).
To block e-mail from a specific Sender, simply match the whole e-mail address using the Sender is option.
For example: |
Sender is jennifercox@friendlymail.com
would auto-delete any messages from that exact address. |
Sometimes, junk e-mail comes from a particular host with a random name, and so you can't reliably match up the entire Sender address. Instead, use the Sender ends option to specify the host name.
For example: |
Sender ends @junkmail.com |
However, be careful with this option as sometimes you'll get junk e-mail from a reputable host such as hotmail.com or aol.com, and if you add those hosts to the list you may well filter out friendly e-mail.
For example: |
Sender ends @friendlymail.com
would filter out:
cheap.insurance@friendlymail.com
but also jennifercox@friendlymail.com |
Alternatively, you may find that junk e-mail comes from the same name but with a slightly different host each time. In this case, use the Sender begins option to specify the name.
For example: |
Sender begins cheap.insurance
would filter out:
cheap.insurance@junkmail01.com
cheap.insurance@junkmail02.com
cheap.insurance@junkmail03.com |
Tips on the Subject |
Generally, the Subject of an e-mail is always different and so exact matches on the whole Subject are rare.
More commonly, use the Subject begins option to filter out company updates and promotions because they often start with the same words.
For example: |
Subject begins Your weekly update
would filter out:
Your weekly update: Cheaper prices
Your weekly update: Even cheaper prices |
By far the most obvious filter is to match the Subject against single words. If the Subject contains any of the words in your list it will be taken as junk e-mail.
Bear in mind that a friend might send you an e-mail with a Subject such as 'I got a great deal on my car insurance' and so you usually set items in this filter to ask for confirmation before Auto-Deleting them, otherwise the word insurance might trigger a delete.
Here are some suggestions for single words: |
financial
platinum
gold
cheaper
voucher
free
mortgage
demo
career |
money
offer
trial
saving
erotic
insurance
shares
pension
auction |
credit card
loan
explicit
adult
limited
debt
stocks
promotion |
Tip Using a word like insurance will filter out subjects such as house insurance, life insurance, car insurance and so on, rather than specifying each term indivdually. |

Tips on newsletters |
Sometimes when you subscribe to a website you will get promotional e-mail on a regular basis.
You can usually unsubscribe from these services but if that doesn't work you can filter on the whole Sender address as it is usually the same for every newsletter.
For example: |
Sender is newsletter@centralperk.com |
